Health Minister Osagie Ehanire said the first confirmed case of the virus in sub-Saharan Africa was an Italian citizen who had returned from Milan earlier this week.

“The patient is clinically stable, with no serious symptoms,” Ehanire said, adding that the patient was being treated at a hospital for infectious diseases in Lagos.

Before this case in Nigeria, there had been just two cases on the continent — in Egypt and Algeria.

In December 2019, there was an epidemic in Wuhan, China, that left many people dead. The name of this epidemic is a human coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, which was found to be a result of the contract some people had with seafood and animal, and an animal market in Wuhan, and has since spread to other countries of the world.

The Lagos state health authorities reacted quickly, medical experts from international organizations in the country deployed from the capital Abuja and the disease was confined to the upscale neighborhoods in the city.

This time around officials insists that the country has made its preparations for a potential coronavirus outbreak.

“I can tell you that in Nigeria we have a costed plan as part of preparedness for this epidemic,” deputy health minister Olorumibe Mamora said earlier this month.

Mamora said quarantine centers had been established in Lagos and Abuja and were being set up in Port Harcourt city and the largest northern city of Kano.

We would do everything we need to do if the situation arises in respect of the safety of our citizens. The official said.

Nigeria’s Center for Disease Control says there are three laboratories in the country which have the capacity to contain the virus and health officials have been meeting to share intelligence concerning coronavirus.

WHAT THEN IS CORONAVIRUS?

Coronavirus is an extremely common cause of colds and other upper respiratory infections. These viruses are also known as zoonoses, meaning they can infect animals and spread from one animal to the other; it can also spread to humans, especially if certain mutations in the virus occur.

SYMPTOMS OF THIS VIRUS?

The symptoms of coronavirus include; cough, fever, and shortness of breath. There are some early signs of non-respiratory symptoms such as nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Some people, particularly the old with a weak immune system further develop a more serious infection, such as bronchitis or pneumonia.

WAYS TO PREVENT CORONAVIRUS

At the moment, there is no Coronavirus treatment, as there is no known vaccine to prevent this virus; the best way is to stay away from anyone or anything with this virus. Here are a few preventive measures to follow to prevent:

1.     AVOID NON-ESSENTIAL TRAVEL TO CHINA

Everyone should avoid nonessential travel to China and, at the moment, the Chinese government has placed a travel ban to and from Wuhan and other cities in Hubei Province.

If your trip to China is of immense importance, then you are advised to first alert your doctor, avoid sick people and avoid animals and animal markets in general.

Practice basic hygiene that can prevent you from being sick on the plane if you plan on traveling anywhere at all.

2. PRACTISE RESPIRATORY HYGIENE

Make sure when coughing and sneezing, you cover your mouth and nose with your elbow or use a tissue. Make sure you throw the tissue immediately into a trashcan. Clean your hands with alcohol-based hand sanitizer or water and soap. Also, Wash your hands regularly with soap and water or hand sanitizer containing alcohol.

3. MAINTAIN A DISTANCE IN PUBLIC

Make sure to maintain at least, the one-meter distance between yourself and others, especially, those with a cough, or sneezing and have a fever.

The reason is that anyone who’s infected with respiratory diseases, like the coronavirus, coughs or sneezes, they contain small droplets containing the virus, and if you are too close, you can breathe in the virus.

Ensure you tell your doctor if you have traveled to China or in close contact with someone with respiratory symptoms, and seek medical attention.

Also, if you have a fever, cough or difficulty in breathing, it is advisable to seek help from your doctor as it may be due to a respiratory infection or other serious conditions.
